What I Learned Being A Field Manager
Being a brand ambassador, team lead, or field manager can be a great experience if you have a team that works as a unit. Working together is important in all circumstances; when things are going well and when situations arise where variables are out of your control. When this happens, it’s the responsibility of the team, and ultimately, the field manager to mitigate or eliminate problematic situations that can occur during activations.
Here are some strategies and tactics that all teams and field managers should implement:
- Communicate: It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how much more efficient teams can be when they make a conscious effort to talk to one another. Ask questions, give clear and simple answers, demonstrate the correct way to perform tasks. You won’t be able to accomplish anything if there is no clear direction – communication is key.
- Stay calm: People will naturally feed off your energy. Think about a high stress level time when you were in school, or at work; working in a group setting, or directly with your prof or boss. Effective leaders, even in these high stress scenarios, will keep their team together by not losing their cool. The moment a leader shows they’re starting to feel the pressure, their teammates won’t be too far behind – teamwork makes the dream work.
- Delegate: Everyone has their strong suits. Leaders need to identify which member of their team would be most effective in each role to optimize the team’s performance. Someone may be talkative, but not have great organization skills. They could draw people into your activation, but would be less effective handling sign-ups or product demonstrations – leverage your teammates’ strengths.
- Have fun: Happy teams are productive teams. Yes, it’s important to make sure an activation is successful, but don’t forget, attitude is 90% of success. Participants, your team, and especially client want to see that you’re having a good time. – a smile does make a difference.
These are just a few of the ways that a field manager and their team can work together to make an activation successful. To truly understand and appreciate the responsibility that comes with being a field manager, starting off as a brand ambassador is necessary. Earning your stripes, so to speak, is the best way to learn how activations work at every level.
