Skype released their latest stats which show promising growth amongst Millennials. Skype reported more than 300 million total users, reaching 24 percent of 18 to 24 year olds worldwide. Further, as of December 2013, Millennial users grew by 28% versus year ago. Considering the high influence of this generation over the mass market, this is a big win for Microsoft.
Outside of being available on any device and any operating system, Skype is demonstrating strong innovation which is driving its relevance amongst ‘youth’. Amongst their newest features is instant video messaging – users can send video recordings just like an IM, perfect for the on-the-go Millennial lifestyle.
Further, within the ‘new modern app’ on Windows 8.1, users can IM or video chat simultaneously while studying, reading the news, or using another app, which appeals to Millennials’ need for hyper multi-tasking. No doubt there’s intensifying competition; however, if Skype continues to develop these types of ‘on-demand’ features they are well-positioned for continued growth amongst Millennial users.
