Don't Worry, Be Happy

It’s safe to assume that everyone at one time or another has gone through a rut – sometimes it’s a feeling of being stuck in a job, relationship or city; being pressured by family members; or not being content with the constant routines in your life. These feelings may lead to anxiety and regret about the choices you’re making – but not to worry, more Millennials are going through this then they’d like to admit. There’s a few things you can do to minimize the feeling of being lost:

  1. Realize that life is a journey: You’re not going to wake up one morning with your dream house, debt paid off and the lifestyle you desire. We all go through the motions of school, internships, (what seem like) pointless jobs, and paying our dues before finding the career and routine that make you look forward to each day.
  2. Don’t compare yourself to others: Everyone has a different path and goes about reaching their goals differently. As hard as it may be, resist the urge to think you’re falling behind just because you aren’t at the same level as your friends. Every butterfly spreads its wings on its own time.
  3. Think about the future: On those days that you are questioning the seemingly pointless coffee runs, hours of unpaid overtime, unanswered after unanswered resume, think about your end goal and the career that you are aspiring to having. The finish line may not be in sight, but you’ll get there.
  4. Take action & be willing to take risks: If you’re feeling bored, make a change – it doesn’t have to be drastic. Join a new workout class, try a new recipe once a week, or take up a new hobby. A simple change in your day-to-day routine can make all the difference. Doing something outside of your comfort zone could be the one thing that makes you feel back on track.
  5. Don’t worry: Easier said then done. What happens if you quit without another job? What happens if you spend all your savings on a trip? Does your new love interest really like you? What happens if you take a chance? Whatever questions you’re pondering, remember to learn something from every experience you encounter.

Whether you’re packing your room to head back to school, sitting on your balcony pondering your next career step, or even contemplating growing your family; all you have to remember is that it will all make sense one day.
