Security training IT teams could host on their own schedule
A two day program with a physical kit, hands on labs and certification vouchers

A widening security skills gap
Remote work meant freedom for most people. To IT professionals it was code red for data security. When 5 offices become 50,000 branches of one, a distributed workforce means more opportunities for bad actors. Organizations looking to beef up security found gaps in both available people and specialized skill.
By the end of the year, more than 3 million cyber security jobs would go unfilled for lack of skills and training. Yet IT security professionals were burnt out, with 54% leaving their jobs due to overwork in 2019 and 2020, while 99% of security practitioners agreed a specialized security certification would boost their careers. At a time when IT teams were struggling to keep up, how could anyone ask them to carve out time for training?
A self hosted skilling experience
Security Skilling was a two day training experience that security teams could host on their own schedule and at their own pace. A physical training package arrived with an agenda, links to training resources, access to hands on labs, and vouchers for a Microsoft security certification.
The most literal name possible
Knowing the audience, the program was given the most literal name possible. When you are surrounded by security threats and barely have time for lunch, you are not going to decipher a cryptic marketing message.
A minimalist look and feel
Minimalist design principles and iconography ran through the creative and the messaging, so instructions came across clearly. The theme of simplicity carried into every part of the experience.
Signing up on a microsite
Customers visited a campaign microsite and followed a simple process to register on behalf of their organization. Once signed up, they received access to a carefully curated learning path.
A kit, then the exam
After signing up, customers received a Security Skilling Kit containing t-shirts, stress cubes and collateral to generate interest across their team. After training, they could request vouchers offering 50% off the MS-500 Security Exam.
A new standard
What began as an easier way for teams to consume training content set a new standard for training at Microsoft, and proved the business impact training can generate.
